Ghosts Are Real... But They're Not Always What You Think

Foggy hillside with a dark wooden cabin, bare trees, and damp grass, creating a quiet, eerie mood.

When someone tells me their house is haunted, my first question is usually: haunted by what? Because after years of working as a medium and encountering some seriously strange activity in my own homes, I've realized that we're using the word ghost to describe several very different phenomena. And the distinction matters more than you might think.

We've been conditioned by horror movies and paranormal television to interpret unexplained footsteps, strange noises, and unexpected presences as evidence of something frightening. But in my experience, not every haunting involves a conscious spirit, and not every unexplained presence is something we need to fear.

Not Every Ghost Is Actually a Ghost

One of the most fascinating distinctions I've encountered is the difference between a conscious spirit and what I call an energetic echo. A conscious spirit, in my understanding of mediumship, is an intelligent presence that can communicate, respond, and make choices. Some of these souls appear to remain close to the earthly realm after death, whether because of unfinished business, attachment to loved ones, fear, or simply their own stubbornness.

An energetic echo is something entirely different. Imagine hearing footsteps descending the same staircase every night, but there's no consciousness there to communicate with. My interpretation is that certain experiences can leave energetic impressions on a location, almost like a recording that continues playing long after the original event has ended. In that case, what you're experiencing might not be a ghost at all.

My Lake House Has Become a Paranormal Circus

I didn't always believe in ghosts the way I do today. Then I bought my lake house, and apparently every wandering spirit in New England decided to stop by for a visit.

Over the years, I've encountered what I perceived as a young Civil War soldier, a woman who feared encountering her abusive husband in the afterlife, a firefighter who seemed confused about his own death, and a gentleman named George who continues to make appearances around the property. Each encounter has been different, and each has shaped the way I understand spirit communication, boundaries, and what may happen after death.

But the most ridiculous moment happened while recording this very podcast episode. Right in the middle of telling a ghost story, something came crashing down in my room. I'd been recording for hours without anything falling, and suddenly, while discussing paranormal activity, there was an enormous crash. Was it Spirit making an appearance? That's certainly how I experienced the timing, and you'll hear my completely unfiltered reaction in the episode.

Sometimes It's the Land, Not the House

Another possibility I explore is whether certain locations retain the impressions of what happened there. Think about historic battlefields such as Gettysburg, where visitors have reported everything from unusual sensations to apparent encounters with figures from the past. Within an energetic framework, I wonder whether some of those experiences involve the history of the land itself rather than a particular spirit attempting to communicate.

And then there are the encounters that don't fit neatly into any of these categories. I've had experiences during house clearings that I interpret as elemental or nonhuman presences, which raise an entirely different set of questions about consciousness and the environments we inhabit. These are my observations and interpretations, not established explanations for paranormal phenomena, but they're part of why I think our definition of a haunting deserves to be expanded.

You Don't Have to Be Afraid of What You Don't Understand

The biggest takeaway from this conversation isn't that every unexplained noise has a spiritual cause. It's that we don't need to jump immediately to fear or certainty when something unusual happens. We can investigate ordinary explanations, notice whether an experience repeats, pay attention to what we actually perceive, and remain curious about what we don't know.

In my spiritual practice, I also work with energetic boundaries and intentional clearing to create an environment that feels supportive and peaceful. For me, understanding the distinctions between a conscious presence, an energetic imprint, and the history of a location has changed the way I respond to unusual experiences.

So the next time someone tells you their house is haunted, remember that the word ghost might be hiding a much more interesting story.
