Can You Communicate With Someone's Soul While They're Still Alive?

Most people associate mediumship with communicating with the dead. A loved one passes away, a medium establishes a connection, and messages come through that offer comfort, healing, or reassurance. But some of the most extraordinary experiences I've had as a medium involve people who haven't died at all. They're still here, living their lives, and in some cases, completely unaware that I've been communicating with what I understand to be their soul.
This is something I call living mediumship, and it has fundamentally changed how I understand relationships, consciousness, and the possibilities of spirit communication.
When Someone's Soul Says What Their Human Never Could
One of the most profound applications of living mediumship has been working with clients navigating difficult family relationships. I've experienced readings where the soul of an abusive parent or emotionally unavailable family member comes forward with an entirely different perspective from the personality my client knows.
Imagine spending years waiting for an apology from someone who hurt you, knowing that person may never acknowledge what happened. Then imagine experiencing a communication in which their soul recognizes the damage, expresses remorse, and encourages you to establish the boundaries you've been struggling to maintain. I've witnessed how meaningful that experience can be for clients who have spent years carrying the emotional weight of someone else's behavior.
The important distinction is that this doesn't excuse the behavior of the living person or obligate anyone to maintain a harmful relationship. Rather, these experiences can offer a different perspective that helps someone recognize they don't have to spend the rest of their life waiting for another person to change.
The Soulmate Who Showed Up Before Anyone Knew Who He Was
One of my wildest living mediumship experiences happened during a reading when an unfamiliar young man appeared. He was handsome, around my client's age, and clearly connected to her, but she couldn't identify him. I continued the reading, bringing through other loved ones, while this mysterious gentleman remained present.
Near the end of our session, my client asked when she would meet her soulmate. Suddenly, the unidentified man stepped forward. As I described his appearance, personality, family, and circumstances, my client began recognizing someone: the man she was already dating.
What followed was a conversation I never expected to have during a mediumship reading. In my experience, this man's soul was encouraging her to reconsider the relationship. Previous heartbreak had left her guarded, and some of the qualities she interpreted as warning signs might have been unfamiliar expressions of playfulness, affection, and vulnerability. The communication offered a perspective on their relationship that neither of us had anticipated.
I can't tell you how that relationship ultimately unfolded, but the experience raised an extraordinary question. If we can communicate with the soul of someone who's still living, what might we learn about the relationships we're currently navigating?
Using Living Mediumship in Everyday Relationships
These experiences aren't limited to client readings. I've begun using living mediumship as part of my everyday life, particularly in how I approach parenting and marriage.
When my teenage son is overwhelmed by homework, or my daughter is navigating a world where she often seems older than her years, I sometimes connect with what I perceive as their higher consciousness. Rather than focusing exclusively on the immediate frustration, I ask what they might need from me, how I can best support them, and whether there's a bigger perspective I'm missing.
I've found that this practice helps me become more patient, compassionate, and intentional. It doesn't replace listening to my children, respecting their individuality, or making practical parenting decisions. It gives me another way to reflect on how I'm showing up in their lives.
And perhaps that's the most fascinating possibility of living mediumship. We spend so much time trying to understand what other people think, feel, and want from us. What happens when we become willing to consider that there may be another level of perspective available?
What Living Mediumship Changes
The most interesting thing about living mediumship isn't simply the possibility of communicating with someone who's alive. It's the possibility of seeing a familiar relationship through an entirely unfamiliar lens.
Whether you're caring for an aging parent, navigating a difficult family dynamic, questioning a romantic relationship, or trying to understand your children, there are moments when the information available to us feels incomplete. Living mediumship is one spiritual approach I've explored for seeking a different perspective on those experiences.
You don't have to accept my interpretation to find the question fascinating. But perhaps mediumship has more to offer than conversations with those we've lost. Perhaps some of its most unexpected possibilities involve the people who are still sitting right beside us.
