Where Are Your Dead People? Why Some Loved Ones Feel Close After Death and Others Don’t

One of the strangest things about losing someone is how differently their presence can feel afterward. Some departed loved ones seem almost impossible to miss. They show up in dreams, create oddly specific signs, come through clearly in readings, or leave you with that unmistakable feeling that they are still somehow close. Others can feel frustratingly quiet, even when the relationship was incredibly important. That difference can leave people wondering where their loved one actually went and whether the silence means something.

I recently had a conversation with psychic medium Erica Coward that made me look at this question differently. Erica has one grandmother who has historically been unusually difficult to connect with. When I tried to reach her, the connection felt almost like static, which immediately caught my attention because I have experienced similar differences in mediumship readings. Sometimes one spirit comes through with remarkable clarity while another, even during the same reading, can feel much farther away.

The automatic assumption is usually that the medium is having an off day, the person receiving the reading is somehow blocking the connection, or the spirit simply does not want to communicate. But what if there are other possibilities?

The Dead May Not All Be in the Same Place

One thing I have come to believe through my own mediumship is that the spirit world may be far more complex than the single destination we often imagine. I have experienced souls that seem incredibly close to the physical world, others that feel farther away, and connections that require me to adjust how I am tuning in before the communication becomes clearer. I do not claim to have a definitive map of the afterlife, but I no longer assume that every departed person is sitting in the exact same energetic place waiting for us to call.

That distinction became particularly interesting with Erica's grandmother. When we stopped trying to connect with her in the way I would normally approach mediumship and shifted the energetic level of the connection, she became easier to perceive. It raised a much larger question about the people we love after death: perhaps the fact that you cannot feel someone clearly does not automatically mean they are absent. It may mean you are looking for them in a way that does not match how that particular connection works.

That possibility matters because grief has a way of turning silence into meaning. If you feel one parent constantly but never feel the other, it can be easy to believe one is around while the other is not. If your sibling dreams about your grandmother and you never do, you may start wondering why she visits them instead of you. We interpret the difference personally when the difference may have very little to do with love at all.

What If Spirit Communication Is a Skill on Both Sides?

Then Erica told a story that took the conversation somewhere I did not expect. Years ago, she had an extraordinarily vivid dream in which she experienced dying, arriving in what she describes as a type of soul school, and being asked what she wanted to learn. Her answer was that she wanted to learn how to return and communicate with her husband and children.

Whether you interpret an experience like that literally or symbolically, the idea underneath it is fascinating. We spend enormous amounts of time teaching living people how to communicate with Spirit. We learn how to recognize intuitive information, notice signs, interpret dreams, develop mediumship, and distinguish spiritual communication from the noise of our own minds. We rarely ask whether communication might also involve something happening on the other side.

What if some departed loved ones are simply better at getting our attention than others? One person might seem to communicate effortlessly through dreams while another creates physical synchronicities. Someone else may be easy for a medium to reach but almost impossible for their own family to perceive. If communication is relational rather than one-directional, the enormous variety in people's experiences after loss begins to make a little more sense.

A Lack of Signs Does Not Necessarily Mean a Lack of Connection

Erica's grandmother eventually gave her one of the most physical signs she had ever experienced. After Erica essentially demanded that her grandmother make herself known, Erica's daughter unexpectedly asked her to stop at a cemetery they regularly passed. They went in, walked around, and Erica found herself standing near a grave marker that read “Nana Phillips.” Phillips was Erica's maiden name, and Nana was what they called her grandmother.

That does not prove a universal theory about how the dead communicate, nor does every coincidence have to become a message from Spirit. What it does illustrate is how wildly different communication can look. The grandmother who felt staticky and difficult to reach through one form of connection seemed perfectly capable of creating an experience Erica would immediately recognize through another.

This is why I think “Where are my dead people?” is a much more interesting question than it initially appears. It is not simply asking whether someone survives death. It opens questions about where consciousness may go, why some departed loved ones feel closer than others, how dreams and signs fit into communication, and whether different souls may interact with us in different ways.

The biggest thing I would take from this conversation is not that we have figured out exactly where everyone goes after they die. We haven't. It is that silence does not automatically equal absence, and one person's connection does not have to look like anyone else's. If you have been searching for someone you love and wondering why you cannot feel them in the way you expected, there may be far more possibilities worth exploring before deciding they simply are not there.

Where Are Your Dead People? was created for exactly this larger exploration. If you've found yourself wondering where someone went after death, what they may be experiencing now, or how connection with them might actually work, this is where we go deeper into those questions.
