Astrology can give you helpful language for understanding your personality, emotions, relationships, and the different seasons of your life. It can also become another system that tells you who you are, what you should do, and why every inconvenience is apparently Mercury retrograde’s fault.

In this episode of The Unity Code, I spoke with astrologer, designer, and holistic guide Hollis Maloney about a more grounded approach to astrology. Hollis combines astrology with somatic awareness and creative expression to help people understand not only what is happening in their birth chart, but how those patterns actually feel in their body and show up in real life.

Astrology Should Help You Understand Yourself

Astrology is often approached as a purely intellectual practice. You learn your signs, houses, placements, and transits, then attempt to determine what all of that information means about you.

Hollis encourages people to take the additional step of asking whether an interpretation actually feels true.

Does the information help you understand yourself more clearly? Does it give language to something you have experienced for years? Or does it make you feel limited, boxed in, or defined by someone who has never met you?

Your birth chart can offer useful insight, but it should not override your lived experience. Astrology is meant to expand your self-awareness, not replace your intuition.

What Does Astrology Feel Like in the Body?

Our bodies often react before our minds fully understand what is happening. Stress may appear as tension, agitation, shutdown, or restlessness. Somatic awareness allows you to notice those reactions and become curious about what they are communicating.

Astrology can add another layer of context. Hollis recommends following the moon as a simple introduction to understanding astrological energy. Because the moon changes signs about every two and a half days, you can begin noticing whether certain lunar placements affect your mood, patience, energy, or emotional sensitivity.

The goal is not to blame the moon for your behavior. It is to recognize your patterns so you can respond with greater awareness and self-compassion.

Your Body Can Help You Find Your Voice

Hollis also works with people who struggle to express what they know, feel, or want. This can appear in relationships, creative projects, and business.

You may understand exactly what you want to say, but tense up when it is time to say it. You may have a clear business vision but struggle to communicate it in a way that feels natural. You may edit yourself so heavily that your message no longer sounds like you.

Somatic and creative practices can help move that energy instead of leaving it trapped in your head. Your most authentic expression usually begins by noticing what feels resonant and true inside your own system.

Astrology Without the Clickbait

Hollis is not interested in dramatic astrology headlines declaring that one transit will ruin your life or make a specific day the best day you have ever experienced.

Every astrological transit affects people differently based on their individual chart and circumstances. That means Mercury retrograde is not automatically responsible for every missed email, and one beautiful planetary conjunction does not guarantee that candy will rain from the sky.

Astrology is most helpful when it creates context, not panic. It can help you understand the energetic weather around you, but you still choose how you respond to it.

Why Chiron Is Worth Exploring

When I asked Hollis which astrological placement she wishes more people understood, she chose Chiron.

Often called the wounded healer, Chiron can reveal an area of tenderness or challenge that eventually becomes a source of wisdom. This placement can be especially meaningful for teachers, healers, mentors, and leaders because our most difficult experiences often influence how we support others.

Your pain does not need to define you, but the wisdom you gain from it may become part of the work you are here to share.

Keep Your Authority

The biggest takeaway from our conversation was simple: do not give your power away to astrology.

A birth chart, astrologer, or online prediction can offer perspective, but you still get to decide what feels accurate and useful. Run the information through your own body, instincts, and lived experience.

Astrology should help you know yourself more deeply. It should not tell you that someone else knows you better than you do.
